Lake Water Quality:

The lake water quality monitoring program on Go Home Lake consists primarily of biweekly bacteriological testing at 6 selected sites from mid June until mid September.
The monitoring program measures total coliforms (TC), escherichia coli (E. coli) and water clarity (Secchi depth) at each of the 6 sites 7 or 8 times over the summer.

At the time of the last testing total coliform counts in all lake samples exceed recommended guidelines for drinking water.
Please note the Ministry of the Health and the Ministry of the Environment and Energy state that surface water is unsafe for consumption unless boiled or otherwise treated for bacterial contamination. Bacterial levels in surface water are subject to fluctuation, depending on environmental conditions. Results of analysis of untreated lake water samples are therefore accurate for only a short time after samples are taken.

E. coli counts in all lake samples are well below the Recreational Use Guideline of 100cfu/100ml and can be considered safe for swimming.

The E. coli results show continued improvement over those obtained in 2009 and prior years. Cottagers are encouraged to ensure their septic systems are functioning correctly and properly maintained in order to avoid deterioration in lake water quality.
